Composition

Background

Plain looking backgrounds bring out the subject you are trying to capture. When looking through the viewfinder study the background for the best result possible. Stay away from reflective objects such as windows and mirrors.

Landscapes

As you snap a shot of that gorgeous vista, try to place a subject somewhere in the foreground of the picture. Your photo will have more impact because of the added depth and perspective. (And before snapping the picture, make sure the horizon or waterline is level with the frame.)

Get closer

Getting closer to your subject increases the quality of the picture by eliminating unnecessary background, and brings the focus of the picture to what you really want to capture, the subject.

Be different

When taking a picture of a person, place them to one side of the picture. This is a great way to make your pictures more interesting and appealing to the eye.

Viewpoints

Lying down while taking a picture of the dog playing or kneeling to take a picture of a toddler's first steps. This will help the people viewing the pictures feel like they were a part of it all!

Action photos

Have your subject do something, or concentrate on something, while you take their picture. Their expression will look more natural.
